Imphal, June 13: Human Rights activists in Manipur staged a mass rally at Imphal on Sunday to protest against the atrocities committed on women and children by anti-social elements and also personnel of security forces.

The United NGO Mission, a consortium of 103 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) functioning in the state gave the call for this rally.

Senior leaders who addressed the rally accused concerned officials of the state government of having turned a blind eye to the crimes committed against women and children in the state.

Director of the Manipur State Social Welfare Department, G Satyabati Devi, noted that a mass awareness has to be spread and the locals enlightened on the evils of illegal trafficking of women and children in the state.

“After giving many awareness programmes also we are not being able to control the crimes against women and children. We have come to know that some women and children are being trafficked to other states of the country as well, and even to foreign countries too. Now we are in coordination with the concerned departments of other states,” said Devi.

The Secretary of the United NGO Mission, U Nabakeshwor Singh said that there has been a shift in the pattern of crimes against women over the past couple of years.

He mentioned the number of women being killed by their own family members and relatives for one reason or the other have been on the rise and this has to be checked.

“The young women who are married get killed after a few years. These women would be mothers someday in the future and they are going to build the future of Manipur. If women continue to get killed then how can the society be built or rebuilt?” Singh added.

He also alleged that personnel of security forces commit crimes against women.
